East Bay Beer Week ’23

This Beer Creates Opportunity DIPA, the official collaboration beer of SF Beer Week ’23, spearheaded by BABG’s DEI Committee. (Courtesy SF Beer Week)

Okay, so technically it IS SF Beer Week, but since I’m an East Bay native (from wayback when the 510 was still the 415 and the phones had dials on them and were mounted on walls), here are some highlights from the “other” side of the Bay Bridge.

For details on all of these events and the most up-to-date list, check out sfbeerweek.org.

FRIDAY 2/10

East Bay Beer Week Kick Off21st Amendment Brewery, San Leandro (ticketed, $65-90)

The single Opening Gala is on hold for one more year, so once again each chapter of the Bay Area Brewers Guild is hosting a regional kick-off party. Your ticket includes unlimited tastes from regional breweries. Live music and food will also be available. Check each region’s event for time and specific details. (If you’re going to the SF kickoff on Saturday, I’ll see you there!)

SATURDAY 2/11

Grain to Glass: A Farmer, Maltster and Brewer(s) Walk into a BarAdmiral Maltings, Alameda (ticketed, $20)

The East Bay is the proud home of one of the few craft maltsters in the country, and their phenomenal pub, The Rake. As they say, malt is the soul of beer, and your ticket includes a tour and tasting at with the farmers and brewers who, well, farm and brew. (Pro-tip — even if there isn’t an event, get over to The Rake anyway. Their tap list is mind-blowing, and they now also serve cocktails and spirits made with Admiral Maltings malt.)

23rd Double IPA FestivalThe Bistro, Hayward (ticketed, $80-100)

This perennial favorite, which predates Beer Week itself by a good decade, is considered the Holy Grail for Hop Heads. I first tasted Pliny the Elder here back in the day, and it was mind-blowing. Prepare to get your palate wrecked!

Saison SaturdaySante Adairius, Oakland (pay as you go)

I adore Saisons, and Sante Adairius makes some of the best. Bay Area folks were thrilled when they opened their Oakland outpost, in the former Trappist space. Joining them will be Saisons from Seattle’s Fair Isle Brewing, Missouri’s Side Project Brewing, and other special guests. The Holy Grail for … Saison Heads??

SUNDAY 2/12

Pizza Port Tie Dye Party, Tap Takeover & FundraiserDegrees Plato, Oakland (pay as you go)

Anytime you can enjoy great beer and support a great cause, I’m in! Carlsbad’s Pizza Port Brewing is taking over the taps, including some taproom-only styles not usually seen in these parts. Make yourself a tie-dye shirt and support BAYS (Bay Area Young Survivors, a breast cancer support group for younger people).

MONDAY, 2/13

HopperoniArmistice Brewing, Richmond (pay as you go)

Beer and pepperoni … hellOOOooo?!?!?! Bonus — Armistice is releasing their IPA collaboration with soon-to-the-East-Bay Cellarmaker, Duelling Mullets, and their new DIPA, Stinkerbell. Double bonus — every Monday at Armistice is $5 Monday, INCLUDING TODAY! So, to recap — pepperoni, fresh IPA (and DIPA), and $5 pints. What are you waiting for???

TUESDAY 2/14

Brewer V Brewer: Collaboration Beer Dinner with Drake’s & HenHouseDrake’s Dealership, Oakland (ticketed, $140)

Pricey, yes. But it’s a six-course aphrodisiac dinner with beer pairings. A competition where truly everyone wins, including love! Awwww. Hurry, tickets are limited and this usually sells out.

Beer & Metal Show ft. Hell Fire + OxideThe Golden Bull, Oakland (ticketed, $12-20)

For those seeking a bit more, um, aggressive Valentine’s experience, Golden Bull (co-owned by fellow Pinole Valley Spartan Billie Joe Armstrong, who also plays in a little band called Green Day) is hosting a concert with two local Metal bands. Oh, and Cellarmaker’s taking over the taps, including pouring their collab IPA with Hell Fire, Medieval Cowboys Hazy WC IPA. Bang your hop head!

WEDNESDAY 2/15

Beer Is Black History ft. Hella Coastal, Oak Park & Draught SeasonPaulista Brazilian Taproom & Kitchen, Oakland (pay as you go)

“Beer Is Black History” is a national collaboration effort to spotlight Black-owned breweries. Paulista is hosting the release of the local version with Black-owned breweries Hella Coastal of Oakland and Oak Park Brewing of Sacramento. Celebrate Beer Week AND Black History Month!

THURSDAY 2/16

Livermoron Brew Crawl & Food DriveDowntown Livermore (pay as you go)

I have a soft spot for Livermore. Spent many a weekend there as a kid (a million years ago) hanging out with the relatives, and sometime later (a half-million years ago), I co-ran a wine shop in the heart of Downtown, which has since bloomed into a destination all its own.

Livermoron IPA is an all-Livermore-brewery collaboration, which will be poured at several locations along First Street. Attendees will also have the opportunity to donate to the Alameda County Community Food Bank.

Trivia Night & Danksy Cold IPA Collab ReleaseEpidemic Ales, Concord (pay as you go)

Three things I love — Epidemic Ales, Morgan Territory Brewing, and Cold IPAs. You can get them all here, as Epidemic releases their collab with MT, Danksy Cold IPA. And if you’re a know-it-all, prove it during trivia night.

BTW, Morgan Territory will soon be opening their first satellite location, in downtown Pleasant Hill! I’m quite thrilled, as that’s a hell of a lot closer to me than Tracy is.

FRIDAY 2/17

Firkin & Fire Cask Fest — Admiral Maltings, Alameda (ticketed, $55)

I’ve already waxed poetic about The Rake, but now it goes next-level. Few things in life are as sublime as beer pulled straight from a cask, and your ticket entitles you to unlimited tastes of12 (!) of them, all made with Admiral malts (natch). Plus, a BBQ dinner is included. I mean, come on!

SATURDAY 2/18

7th Annual East Bay Non-IPA EventTiger’s Taproom, Oakland (pay as you go)

After a week of IPAs-a-plenty, your palate might be a little puckered. Enjoy brews made specifically for Beer Week, as well as special library selections, all of the non-India-Pale variety.

Celebration of Craft Beer FestivalTrumer Brewery, Berkeley (ticketed, $85)

The bookend to the kick-off parties, this festival put on by the California Craft Beer Association celebrates all that’s great about the Bay and California. Ticket includes unlimited tastings from 30 breweries, and dinner! (BTW, when I attended a few years back, Russian River was pouring Younger, and the line wasn’t completely stupid. Just sayin’.)

SUNDAY 2/19

Pinball and PintsPacific Pinball Museum, Alameda (ticketed, $50)

Unlimited beers and unlimited pinball on over 100 machines. Enter tournaments and win prizes. This usually sells out, so act fast.

East Brother 6th Year AnniversaryEast Brother Brewing, Richmond (pay as you go)

Another one of my Richmond locals.  Enjoy special new releases, food trucks, and live music. A great hang and a nice way to wrap up the week’s festivities.

Wherever you go and whatever you do, make sure to do it safely and use public transportation and/or ride shares. And always, always, always, TIP WELL!!! All event organizers and staff are hustling double-time to give you the best experiences possible, be sure to show them the love!

SF Beer Week Showcases Creativity, Cooperation, and Community

Courtesy Pond Farm Brewing Co.

SAN FRANCISCO:  SF Beer Week is poised to sweep through the greater Bay Area from February 10-19. Local breweries, beer specialty bars and other convivial gathering places from Santa Rosa to Monterey and east to the Livermore valley will host the beer community for the region’s biggest craft beer celebration and annual reunion. For 10 days, enthusiasts, brewers and anyone who enjoys craft beer will get together to explore a wonderland of flavor artistry in the place right here, where the craft beer renaissance was born.

Five Regional Showcases To Get Things Rolling
Official SF Beer Week Kick Off festivities hosted by the five chapters of the Bay Area Brewers Guild will anoint the week in widely dispersed locations, each putting local touches on these Friday and Saturday opening events, February 10 and 11.
▪    East Bay brewers and beer enthusiasts reunite at 21st Amendment Brewery in San Leandro, Friday evening, Feb. 10.
▪    The North Bay beer community gathers at Pond Farm Brewing Co. in San Rafael, Friday evening, Feb. 10.
▪    On Saturday, San Francisco beer enthusiasts celebrate atop Salesforce Park, hosted by Barebottle Brewing, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 11, rain or shine.
▪    Breweries and fans along the Coast convene at Other Brother Beer Co. in Seaside, Saturday evening, Feb. 11.
▪    Silicon Valley launches the week at The Guildhouse, in San Jose, Saturday evening, Feb. 11.
Advance ticket information and event descriptions may be found at SFBeerWeek.org

Collaboration beers made by more than one brewery working together and sharing techniques – including an Official Collab being poured at all the Kick Off events – remain a favorite feature. Fans who have followed the action for all 15 years will find familiar traditions, such as an event that helped inspire SF Beer Week, the Bistro’s Double IPA Festival in Hayward, back for its 23rd year. Returning favorites also will include food pairings like the Dim Sum Beer Brunch with Fort Point, and Brewer V Brewer, a collaborative beer dinner with Drake’s of the East Bay and HenHouse of the North Bay. More and more events happening in dozens of cities and towns throughout Beer Week’s 10 days will appear at SFBeerWeek.org as February approaches.

Why Beer Week
First celebrated in 2009, SF Beer Week is a cultural treasure for locals and visitors alike. While the pandemic years created major challenges for small breweries, restaurants and craft beer bars here, as in other parts of the country, this annual tradition continues to bolster community while supporting the small breweries of the Guild and all local craft beer purveyors.

Beer Week Supporters
Making SF Beer Week possible are Bay Area Brewers Guild members along with devoted trade partners and craft beer venues, including top-level sponsors HenHouse Brewing Co., Drake’s Brewing Co., 21st Amendment Brewery and Barretto-Co., along with Barebottle Brewing Co., Pond Farm Brewing Co., Other Brother Beer Co., Trumer Pilsner, San Francisco Brewing Co., Guildhouse, Tiger’s Taproom, City Beer Store, Admiral Maltings, Printed Image, Carle Mackie Power & Ross LLP, Custom Label, Core Cans, Berkeley Yeast, and the California Craft Brewers Association.

SF Beer Week Collaborations: Co-operating for the Win

Courtesy Bay Area Brewers Guild

For Immediate Release:

SAN FRANCISCO – During SF Beer WeekFebruary 11-20, five eagerly-awaited SF Beer Week Official Collaboration Beers – each created by three local breweries working together – demonstrate that both co-operation and competition benefit a thriving craft brewery community.

The annual SFBW Collaboration Brews turn competitors into teammates

For over a decade, different combinations of brewers from different breweries have shared their brewing knowledge and collaborated on creating new beers to launch the annual week-long celebration of craft brewing. The official collabs have become an SF Beer Week fan favorite.

Each of the 2022 collab brews is a creative take on the most popular family of craft styles, the IPA. Since both recipe and process have profound effects on beer flavor, three breweries share the credit for each of these beers.

  • In San Francisco, Barebottle Brewing brewed and fermented “Red Whale,” a tropical red IPA, hopped with Citra, Citra Cryo, Strata and Galaxy hops, following a new recipe created by the brewers at Local Brewing and Woods Beer Co.
  • In the North Bay, Cooperage Brewing executed a recipe designed by Adobe Creek Brewing and Parliament Brewing to create “Hop Drip,” a sour Fruited IPA brewed with apricots and strawberries and hopped with Galaxy and Mosaic hops.
  • The East Bay’s entry, “Intrinsic,” brewed by Oakland’s Temescal Brewing following a recipe designed by Del Cielo Brewing and Headlands Brewing, is described as an enhanced West Coast IPA, using  HBC 586, Mosaic Cryo, Motueka, Vic Secret and Saaz hops.
  • The Silicon Valley brew, “Pure Harmony,” a Cold IPA brewed with local honey from Belmont’s Wings of Nature, comes out of Devil’s Canyon Brewing using a recipe written by Brewing With Brothas and ShaKa Brewing. It’s finished with CTZ, Zappa, Galaxy and Sabro hops.
  • Representing nearby coastal breweries, Santa Cruz’s Woodhouse Blending & Brewing is releasing “Juxtapose,” a double dry-hopped West Coast IPA, following a new recipe written by Highway 1 Brewing and New Bohemia Brewing. It was hopped with Galaxy, Strata, Citra, Mosaic and Cascade hops.

All five of this year’s SF Beer Week official collaborations will be presented on Feb. 11, at simultaneous SF Beer Week Kick Off events in San Francisco, San Rafael, San Leandro, Sunnyvale and Seaside. See https://sfbeerweek.org/kickoffs

After the Kick Offs, some of the official collaboration beers will be available at select locations during beer week. Alameda’s Admiral Malting Company, one of the nation’s few traditional artisan floor-malting facilities, provided malted barley ingredients for the collaborations. The malt makers will pour all five at The Rake taproom in Alameda. Learn more about the 2022 collabs and where to find them on the SF Beer Week site. See https://sfbeerweek.org/collabs

Here Comes the Rest of SF Beer Week

New events keep on pouring in to SFBeerweek.org, where people of the Greater Bay Area go to make plans for all the tastings, gatherings, remote activities and special offers to come during the week.

Reason to Rejoice: SF Beer Week Returns Feb 11-20

Courtesy Bay Area Brewers Guild

SAN FRANCISCO – SF Beer Week is back February 11-20 to celebrate independent craft beers and those who brew them. Events, activities and at-home offerings await from dozens of bars, restaurants and breweries, including members of the Bay Area Brewers Guild, producer of this much-loved tradition.

More types of activities this year mean more options for craft beer fans, including take-away, delivery and shipping selections to enjoy at home, making SF Beer Week accessible to craft beer appreciators anywhere in California.

New in 2022, too, are five opening night festivities that spotlight the five regions of the brewers guild in place of the single centralized gala of years past. Each Kick Off offers a more intimate experience and a nod to the distinct craft beer scene in its corner of the greater Bay Area.

Five Simultaneous SFBW Kick Offs Showcase Local Craft Breweries

  • Harmonic Brewing reminds the region where it all began, as it gathers the San Francisco brewing community at Harmonic Thrive City at Chase Center, complete with the photogenic SFBW letter display which lights up social media each year. This will be the place to sample what’s brewing in SF from Barebottle Brewing Co. to Cellarmaker Brewing Co. to Woods Beer Co. and more.
  • San Rafael’s Pond Farm Brewing hosts the craft beer brewers of the North Bay. Taste the freshest and the best from favorite brewers, from Cooperage Brewing to Parliament Brewing and more.
  • In San Leandro, 21st Amendment Brewery – the largest venue with plenty of tasting room – will be ground zero for mingling with East Bay breweries. From Del Cielo to Drake’s to Fieldwork to Temescal to Ghost Town and many more, come meet the neighborhood.
  • Down the coast in Seaside, Other Brother Beer Co. will welcome beer-loving coastal residents to a tasty celebration in the space it shares with Ad Astra Bread Co. Meet brewers from Alvarado Street to New Bohemia to Woodhouse and all around their region.
  • Sunnyvale is home to the South Bay Kick Off event at Off the Rails Brewery & Restaurant. Try beers from newcomer ShaKa Brewing, which launched during the pandemic, along with Taplands and more – including the Silicon Valley Official Collaboration brewed at Devil’s Canyon.

These exclusive Kick Off events are the only places, barring a few exceptions, where consumers will find all five of the much-anticipated annual SF Beer Week Official Collaboration Releases on tap. (Learn more and where to find them, including retail locations like Whole Foods Market and local shops like San Francisco’s City Beer Store.)

Attendance at each event is limited. Tickets and guest brewery details for these five exclusive Feb. 11 showcases can be found at: https://sfbeerweek.org/kickoffs

Live Events Live On — With an eye on health and the weather

The Bistro’s Double IPA Festival, held outdoors annually rain or shine, returns to Hayward on Feb. 12. Along with new activities listed at https://sfbeerweek.org/activities many cherished events at smaller venues are slated to return. (Check with the venues for any last-minute changes and applicable Covid policies.)

Others have made a pivot or two. The annual Celebration of Craft — benefitting the California Craft Beer Association, traditionally hosted by Trumer Brewery and an industry insider’s favorite — returns virtually as a specially curated 10-pack of California beers available for shipment anywhere in the state, with exclusive streaming conversations and tasting notes from craft brewers. Find ordering information for this statewide box and more delicious gift boxes for pre-order from local breweries at https://sfbeerweek.org/promotions

“The craft beer community is elated SF Beer Week is back, even while remaining vigilant in keeping staff and customers safe,” said SF Beer Week organizer Joanne Marino, the Bay Area Brewers Guild’s executive director, “As an annual tradition since 2009, having SF Beer Week return feels like one more step toward normal after two years of challenges.”

SF Beer Week 2022 is made possible thanks to the generous support of its sponsors, including title sponsor Whole Foods Market, along with Visit Santa Rosa, Drake’s Brewing Co., 21st Amendment Brewery, Sierra Nevada Brewing, Trumer Brewery, Hop Head Farms, Barretto-Co., Custom Label, Northwest Hop Farms, Tiger’s Taproom, City Beer Store, Hollingbery & Son Hops and Admiral Maltings.

My Picks for SF Beer Week ’20

Yet another Beer Week is upon us here in the Bay Area.  Here’s my annual list of events I would attend if I had the week off, could be in multiple places at once, and a cast-iron liver.

All events are pay as you go unless otherwise noted.

Friday 2/7

Opening Gala, Pier 35, SF — 6pm (5pm VIP)
What hasn’t already been said about the mother of all beer bashes? Hundreds upon hundreds of beers, many made just for Beer Week, great food, yadda, yadda, yadda. Do yourself a favor — have a plan, pace yourself, and hydrate! Don’t even think you’re gonna be able to try all of these. $80, $125 VIP. [Full disclosure, the Bay Area Brewers Guild has covered my entry for the event. Thanks guys!]

Saturday 2/8

After sleeping off the debauchery from the previous night, any events this day will have to be late afternoon/early evening.  That said:

Moksa Special Release, Holy Water, SF — 4pm
Got introduced to Moksa Brewing at last year’s Celebration of Craft.  Just amazing stuff coming out of this brewery in Rocklin, about an hour NE of Sacramento.  The release in question is a WL Weller barrel-aged stout, and they’ll have other offerings, as well.  Should be tremendous.

Sunday 2/9

Johnny Doughnuts & Pond Farm Brewing Collaboration Release Party — Pond Farm Brewing, San Rafael,  11am-3pm
I work in San Rafael, so I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy Pond Farm’s terrific brews (including the GABF Bronze-medal-winning Devil’s Gulch Hazy IPA) many times.  The Old-Fashioned Donut Stout should be amazing.  Side note — JD has an outpost just down the street, next to the Pint Size Lounge, the diviest beer bar this side of Toronado.

Coast Side Brew Bus, Pacifica Brewery, Pacifica — 11:30am-3:30pm
$75 gets you on a bus to travel along the coast from Pacifica Brewery to Pedro Point Brewing, Half Moon Bay Brewing, and Hop Dogma Brewing.  Are you kidding?

Pinball & Pints, Pacific Pinball Museum, Alameda — 2-6pm
I adore pinball.  As a kid we even a machine in our house, which was the coolest thing ever.  $50 gets you unlimited tastings from at least 10 breweries, and free play on more than 100 machines.  TILT!

Monday 2/10

Too many great things on this day.  My highlights:

Bigfoot Vertical, Sierra Nevada Torpedo Room, Berkeley — Noon
Bet you forgot about the Torpedo Room, didn’t ya?  SN is still in my top five breweries, and they’ve released their 40th Anniversary ale this month.  Anyway, offerings here supposedly to date back to 2014.  If you like aged beer, this is the place.

L•Oak*als Only, Beer Revolution, Oakland — Noon
I’m an East Bay native, and I’m all about the local.  Oakland’s beer scene is just stupid great these days, and there’s no better place to enjoy them than the East Bay’s answer to the Toronado, Beer Revolution.

Peet’s & 21st Amendment 1966 Release Party, 21st Amendment Brewpub, SF — 6-9pm
Two of my favorite things on the planet are beer and Peet’s coffee.  They’ve collaborated with 21st Amendment on a Coffee IPA.  HELLOOOOO!!

Tuesday 2/11

Friends w/Beer Benefits ft. Sante Adairius, Triple Rock Brewery, Berkeley — 11:30am
C’mon, it’s Sante Adairius flights at the East Bay’s OG brewpub.  ‘Nuff said.

The Roost 2020, Night 4, Picnic on 3rd, San Francisco — 7-10pm
Henhouse Brewing’s wildly popular popup restaurant The Roost returns, with a different cuisine each night.  This night it’s Southern Spanish with Chef Christina Alexis of The Pleasure Principle.  Four courses, each paired with beer, $75.  They had me at Henhouse.

Wednesday 2/12

#WomxnCrushWednesday, The Rare Barrel, Berkeley — 4pm
Although there has been some progress, the industry in general still has a representation problem.  This event hopes to do something about that.  Featuring beers from breweries with womxn in leadership roles, as well as presentations on hiring/training practices, resume building, interview skills, and networking from leading womxn in the industry.

Game Night: Cards Against Humanity Tournament, Laughing Monk Brewing, SF — 6pm
Please note, Cards Against Humanity is all sorts of wrong, so this event is best avoided by those with weak constitutions and poor senses of humor.  The rest of you will laugh your asses off.

Thursday 2/13

Changing Hands, The Alembic, San Francisco — 4pm
As I said, I’m all about the local, and it doesn’t get more local than this.  The event organizers say it best:

“We are teaming up with Admiral Maltings to give you an experience unlike any other. Try beers that have been made with local malt, which has also been fed to livestock producing local cheeses, and have a fresh hopped cocktail using local hops.”

sfbeerweek.org

Morgan Territory & Slow Hand BBQ Takeover, Hops & Scotch, Walnut Creek — 5:30-8:30pm
If you can’t swing the trip all the way to Tracy, head to the Dub-C to get your Morgan Territory fix.  They make some amazin’ beer (Motorboatin’ IPA is a fave), and paired with some killer BBQ?  What’s not to love?

Friday 2/14

Dessert and Beer Pairing w/Live Music, Speakeasy Ales & Lagers, SF — 3pm
Sweets.  Dancing.  Beers.  A chance to visit the resurrected Speakeasy.  MY heart’s all aflutter.

‘80s Prom Night Valentine’s w/Modern Times, The Willows, SF — 6pm
I was a teen in the ‘80s (Ferris Bueller is STILL the greatest movie of all time, and I’ll fight you), and I LOVE Modern Times, so here you go.  Complete with an all ‘80s playlist AND prizes for best outfits.  Although there’s no way I can squeeze into my Miami Vice suit anymore.

Saturday 2/15

For the beer geeks, I was reeeeally tempted to go with Rich Higgins’ Beer Immersion trip to Alameda.  Yes, it’ll run you $175, but you leave from Fort Point at the Ferry Building, take a ferry to Alameda, and hit Faction Brewing, Admiral Maltings (with lunch at The Rake), and Almanac Brewing.  Just an amazing day-long event.  But…

5th Annual East Bay Non-IPA Tap Takeover, Tiger’s Taproom, Oakland — 2pm
If you’re like me, your palate is probably hop-saturated by now.  So stop by Tiger’s just off of Jack London Square and reset yourself.

Celebration of Craft, Trumer Brewery, Berkeley — 4-8pm
I attended last year, and will again this year (thanks, CCBA!).  This successor to the (in)famous Celebrator party is the unofficial closing event of Beer Week, and a great bookend (or alternative) to the Gala monstrosity.  $65 gets you a meal ticket (food is good!), unlimited pours, and a manageable crowd.  And let me tell you, there’s some great stuff here.  A certain extremely limited TIPA from the North Bay was poured here last year, and the lines weren’t incredibly stupid.

Sunday 2/16

3rd Anniversary Party, East Brother Beer Co., Richmond — Noon
Another shout-out to one of my locals.  East Brother is old school.  No glitters, bruts, or hazys.  Just solid core beers, with an emphasis on outstanding lagers (including their GABF Silver-Winning Bo Pils), and a great cast of rotating seasonals.  And a bonus — they’re releasing a California Common collaboration with Admiral Maltings and Gigayeast.  Trust me, these guys have it dialed in.

So there you have it.  And if for some bizarre reason these events don’t brew your beer, check out sfbeerweek.org for the entire lineup.  It’s statistically impossible for there NOT to be something close to you that you’ll dig.  Cheers, y’all!

Five Unique Official Collaboration Beers to Kick Off SF Beer Week

courtesy Anthony Boyd Graphics/Bay Area Brewers Guild

SAN FRANCISCO – Five never-before-tasted Bay Area Brewers Guild official collaboration beers will be tapped for the first time at the SF Beer Week Opening Gala on Friday, February 7. For SF Beer Week 2020, local craft breweries joined forces to design and brew five unique one-off beers. All five recipes included freshly kilned California-grown malts from Admiral Maltings, in Alameda, one of the nation’s few traditional artisan floor-malting facilities.

These Bay Area Brewers Guild collaboration brews are an annual hallmark of SF Beer Week, expressing the brewers’ collective state of mind each February, and honoring the cooperative and creative spirit of the craft beer community.

The 2020 official SF Beer Week collaborations will offer an exhibition of the bright, hoppy, drinkable beers brewers love to make.

Rice Stratasphere

Rice IPA
7% ABV
Rice Stratasphere delivers an aromatic explosion: tropical, dank and onward into the strata. One of the best new hops to hit the tanks lately is Strata, a monster of a hop with huge aromatics of citrus, indica, and guava. Citra and Denali hops add further layers of complexity, while a dry and clean body from extra pale Pilsner malt, Admiral Pils and puffed Jasmine rice give these hops room to shine. From the East Bay brewers of the Bay Area Brewers Guild.

Common Dreams

California Common
5.3% ABV
This modern SF lager is a nod to one of the original SF beers – updated with vibrant hop varieties developed in New Zealand and America. With an underpinning of flavors from two craft grain products, Admiral Maltings Feldblume Malt and Canadien Maltings Oat Malt, Common Dreams ties brewing heritage to the 21st Century delights of Motueka, Nelson Sauvin and Strata hops. From the San Francisco brewers of the Bay Area Brewers Guild.

Cloud Based

Oat Cream Pale Ale
5.8% ABV
Upload a fluffy tropical Cloud Based Compression IPA – delivering those big hop flavors – all dialed in. It’s a collaborative venture from – who else – the Silicon Valley brewers. Engineered from 2-Row malt, Admiral Maltings Gallagher’s Best malt and the pillowy contributions of Admiral Maltings Clipper Oats, Cloud Based is powered by Strata and Galaxy hops. From the Silicon Valley brewers of the Bay Area Brewers Guild.

Surf ‘n Burps

West Coast Double IPA
9.0% ABV
This is an exceptionally bright, true-to-form West Coast Double IPA, Bay Area-style.Surf ‘n Burps features exciting new hop varieties that include Cashmere and Sabro, along with the always popular Mosaic. Strong citrus notes of lemon and lime combine with peach, pineapple and coconut flavors and aromas from this blend of hops. A firm, but smooth bitterness follows before finishing bone dry, without the faintest kiss of alcohol from this 9.0% beast. This coastal classic is crafted on a base of Admiral Maltings Pilsner and American 2-Row malts. From the Coast Chapter of the Bay Area Brewers Guild,

North Bay Nexus

Pale Ale
6% ABV
This contemporary Pale Ale is new beer at the balancing point: crisp, balanced, citrus, tropical and subtly spicy. Brewed with Admiral Maltings Pilsner, Wheat, Oats, and Rye malts and utilizing old and new brewing techniques to deliver a crisp, balanced brew, North Bay Nexus is infused with brightness from Citra, Amarillo, Saphir and Mandarina Bavaria hops. Nuanced spice notes from the grain bill combined with citrus and tropical notes from the hop additions result in a refreshing beer suitable for any drinking occasion. From the North Bay brewers of the Bay Area Brewers Guild.

At the SF Beer Week Opening Gala, participants will have a chance to compare all five beers and choose a favorite. After the Opening Gala, the five collab beers will be available on draft or in cans at different locations during SF Beer Week as supplies last.

In addition to Admiral Maltings, these releases came together with help from Guild trade partners White Labs and Custom Label.

SF Beer Week is produced by the Bay Area Brewers Guild, a non-profit trade association whose mission is to promote local, independent craft beer and breweries throughout the greater Bay Area. Stay on top of the region’s craft beer scene year-round at DrinkBayBeer.com.
